August 13 online workshop: Introducing the Diversity and Equity Assessment Planning Tool
Most research grants require applicants to discuss their equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) practices to reduce EDI barriers and ensure an inclusive research environment. The Office of Research Services (ORS) invites faculty members across all disciplines to participate in this workshop to learn about a new EDI tool to support and enhance their EDI practices.
Discover how the Tool can empower researchers to advance EDI initiatives within the academic and research spheres. Led by Dr. Alexandra Pedersen (McDonald Institute, Queen’s University), this online workshop focuses on utilizing the Tool’s comprehensive assessment framework across 14 distinct indicators tailored for academic settings.
As part of the interactive workshop, faculty will engage in self-reflection exercises to evaluate current practices and identify opportunities for enhancing EDI in their research groups, classrooms, and broader institutional roles. Participants will begin to develop personalized action plans and timelines that align EDI efforts with research design, grant writing, curriculum development, and strategic planning. By integrating the DEAP Tool into their academic responsibilities, faculty members will strengthen their commitment to fostering inclusive environments essential for impactful scholarship and educational excellence.
Learning objectives:
- Understanding the DEAP Tool: Acquire a deep understanding of the DEAP Tool and its 14 indicators, specifically tailored for academic and research settings.
- Self-Assessment Skills: Develop the ability to critically assess current EDI practices within your current lab, research group, collaboration, classroom, and broader institutional roles.
- Action Plan Development: Learn to formulate strategic action plans and timelines that align with EDI goals and academic responsibilities such as student recruitment, grant writing, and curriculum development.
- Integration with Administrative Tasks: Discover methods to incorporate EDI principles into curriculum development, research planning, and other academic activities.
- Enhancing EDI Practices: Enhance professional development by understanding how to align EDI initiatives with institutional goals and personal growth, fostering a more inclusive and equitable educational and research environment.
